The report by Transport & Environment

Aviation's growth plans clash with Europe's climate goals, says a report from Transport & Environment (T&E). Travel Week, an online publication, reported this. Transport & Environment is an environmental group in Brussels. It strongly advocates for clean transport and energy across Europe. The report says that industry growth will make it harder to cut emissions. T&E urges quick action on airport expansion, increased flights, and low taxes. Even with more sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), airlines will likely keep using the same amount of fossil kerosene in 2023 if flight numbers rise as expected. The report says e-fuels are more sustainable, but they won't meet the needs of the growing sector. T&E asks policymakers to stop expanding airports. They want to fully price emissions and tax aviation fuel. Also, they encourage investment in sustainable fuels and rail networks.

A study by NTNU

The study shows that carbon dioxide emissions from aviation are much higher than we thought. This finding comes from research by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and was reported by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK). The journal Environmental Research published the study. The research looked at around 40 million flights from 2019. It found that global CO2 emissions from aviation are about 50 percent higher than what was reported to the UN. "This study helps us understand global aviation emissions and how much each country contributes," says climate researcher Helene Muri.

The increase in air traffic runs counter to environmental objectives

A study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) shows that carbon dioxide emissions from aviation are much higher than we thought.

Meanwhile, the Transport & Environment report warns that the growth in air traffic will frustrate efforts to reduce emissions.

We must act with urgency to tackle air traffic growth, frequent flying, and low taxes.
