Carbon dioxide emissions from the journey

Carbon dioxide emissions per kilometer vary depending on the mode of transport. On average, traveling by bus produces about 36 g CO₂/km, and the FlixBus I use reports an amount of 26 g. JTraveling by train, it’s around 14 g CO₂/km. However, in Sweden, train emissions are close to zero.

Thus, the carbon dioxide emissions for the trip would be:

  • Bus (Haparanda – Luleå, Berlin – Prague, Hamburg – Stockholm, Luleå – Haparanda): 1583 km * 26 g/km = 41 kg CO₂
  • Train (Luleå – Stockholm, Stockholm – Copenhagen – Berlin, Prague – Hamburg): 2545 km * 14 g/km = 36 kg CO₂.

(In Sweden, train emissions are nearly zero. On the other hand, Central Europe has areas where emissions are higher than the cited 14 g/km)

In total, carbon dioxide emissions would thus be about 77 kg. Note that this is just an estimate, and actual emissions may vary based on various factors, such as vehicle efficiency and passenger count.

First trip: From Northern Finland through Stockholm to Prague

I took my first land trip in autumn 2022. I left Haparanda Travel Center on a Länstrafiken Norrbotten bus. I came back 16 days later. I had a five-day Interrail pass.
