A ten-day Interrail ticket costs about four hundred euros, or even less if you are young or old and if you buy the ticket during a promotional period. In addition, you need to buy sleeping and seat reservation tickets.
Accommodation can easily add up to a larger sum, as overland trips usually last a month or more if you travel even a little further.
I use Airbnb accommodations almost exclusively. When searching, I set three search criteria. The most important one is that I get my own room. Other spaces can be shared. In shared spaces, you meet other people, which is a nice thing. In a hotel, you usually only meet the front desk staff.
The other two criteria are setting the maximum price and the option for free cancellation. When I get a list of accommodations that meet the search criteria, I look at three things: the host’s reviews, easy access to the accommodation, and how quickly the host responds to messages.
Sometimes the host doesn’t have reviews for that particular accommodation yet, but they may have good reviews for another property. The accommodation may look attractive in the photos, but the pictures don’t tell you anything about the noise. It can even be noisy if it is located near a busy passage.
If previous guests mention in their messages, for example, that the sheets are unclean, I immediately reject the accommodation.
The cleanliness of the bathroom is another thing I pay attention to.
I've noticed that among really good reviews, there is often one unnecessary complainer. I don't take them into account if most of the feedback is positive.
An apartment located far from the city center can be a good option if it is along a metro line, commuter train line, or a frequently serviced bus route. A metro trip may consist of several transfers, but the bus has to go all the way to the destination.
If the host does not respond to Airbnb messages, has not provided a phone contact, or does not answer calls, the situation can be difficult if there are problems finding the accommodation or checking in. Self-check-in is not a problem in itself if the instructions appear clear.
I usually book accommodation about two months in advance. People offering accommodation usually appreciate early booking. Only once have I been asked to get back to them later.
I generally travel outside of peak seasons. Accommodation is cheaper and there is space on the trains.
When traveling overland, accommodation accounts for a significant portion of the costs, as the journey usually takes a long time. However, it is possible to get good or at least reasonably acceptable quality accommodation cheaply.
